Let the machine work out the change. If you UNDERchange the customer they will feel you are trying to rob them. If you OVERchange them they will feel guilty if they decide not to own up thinking that you may remember and embarrass them later. They will not come back. So give the correct change. Also visually counting the change from the displayed figure allowes you to be pleasant to the "chatting" customer.
